Aqueous Methods for the Cleaning of painted surfaces

The Latvian Society of Restorers announces the application for a four-day event Aqueous Methods for the Cleaning of painted surfaces – lecture and workshop by Matthew Cushman. The event is supported by the BAFF Baltic-American Dialogue program and State Cultural Capital Foundation.

Instructor:

Matthew Cushman holds Master of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees, is a Conservator of Paintings at the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, and is an Affiliated Assistant Professor at the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. Matthew leads coursework in applications of science to conservation practice and instruction in cleaning technologies and structural treatment of easel paintings. He has published on the subjects of surface documentation techniques, novel treatment protocols, and non-destructive analysis of artworks. Matthew provides consultation in the cleaning and structural treatment of paintings and painted surfaces and has been invited to participate in international consulting committees of experts for such artworks as Maerten van Heemskerck, St. Luke Painting the Virgin, Thomas Gainsborough, Blue Boy and Eugène Delacroix, La Pietà.

 

Overview:

Aqueous Methods for the Cleaning of Painted Surfaces will provide participants with opportunities to improve their understanding of aqueous cleaning systems from theoretical and practical perspectives. The focus of the course will be on practical applications for the cleaning of different types of object surfaces, supported by readings, lectures, discussions, and practical exercises appropriate for participants with a broad range of experience.

 

Program:

Day 1: pH, Conductivity, Chelation.

Day 2: Delivery Methods: Spreadable gels and Hydrogels

Day 3: Surfactants and Emulsions

Day 4: Cleaning protocol

 

Days 1 – 3 will have a theoretical lecture in the mornings and practical workshop afternoons. Day 4 only practical workshop.

 

Participants:

For the practical workshop, there will be a limit of 21 participants (7 participants from each Baltic state - Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia). Lectures are open to 50 participants.

If applicants are more than available places, the selection will be made considering the motivation letter.

 

Application open until 26 June 2023.

A selection committee will review applications and notify applicants by 30 June 2023.

 

Fee:

Only lectures 25 EUR

Lectures + workshops 50 EUR

 

Refreshments will be provided. Lunches will not be covered by the fee.

Participants are kindly requested to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.
